EXPERIENCE: Attorney Mansfield began his legal career as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in New York City’s Law Department, where he handled a wide range of civil law cases in state and federal courts dealing with civil rights, labor, administrative law and discrimination issues. He subsequently became the general counsel and joint owner of a wholesale import/export business which involved the negotiation of international finance agreements and letters of credit, regulatory compliance matters, and managing multi-million dollar annual budgets.
After moving to Red Hook in 1994, attorney Mansfield became involved in local community activities and politics and was elected to represent Red Hook and Tivoli in the Dutchess County Legislature, where he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Public Works & Capital Projects Committee, dealing with complicated infrastructure and budgetary issues. Following his work in the Legislature, he moved on to the State level where he spent close to two years as Chief of Staff to the Majority Leader of the New York State Senate overseeing policy development and legislative initiatives and acting as a liaison to the Senate leadership and central staff. Upon the completion of this position, attorney Mansfield became a founding partner of the local law firm Mansfield, Gautier & Rosenthal LLP where he handles trust and estate administration and litigation, guardianship issues, real estate matters and commercial litigation.
Attorney Mansfield has many years of experience planning and administering trusts and estates in several Surrogate’s courts. Additionally, he has frequently acted as a court appointed guardian, attorney to guardians and court evaluator. This hands-on Surrogate’s Court experience will be invaluable should Attorney Mansfield be elected as Dutchess County’s next Surrogate.
EDUCATION: Attorney Mansfield earned his Bachelor of Arts in History at Middlebury College in 1981. He went on to earn his law degree at New York Law School in 1985 where he graduated magna cum laude and was an editor of the school’s Human Rights Law Journal. The Dutchess County Surrogate’s Court handles a wide range of emotional and complex estate, trust and guardianship matters. Such cases can involve the probate of a will, interpreting a trust agreement, resolving a bitter will contest, settling a judicial accounting or appointing a guardian for a developmentally disabled child or senior citizen. These matters often arise from the loss of a loved one or a bitter family dispute and can involve large inheritances or the personal needs and liberties of a person in need of a legal guardian.
The Surrogate’s Court Judge must have the experience and integrity to be an impartial and fair arbiter, committed to the best interests of all who appear before the court. While the Judge must show compassion and understanding, he or she must also be firm and decisive when ruling on often contentious disputes. The people of Dutchess County deserve the chance to vote for a Surrogate’s Court Judge who best reflects their values and who will protect the needs of all parties, even the most vulnerable, with compassion and integrity. Attorney Mansfield will dedicate himself to being just such a judge if elected and promises to work tirelessly to uphold the high standards of the Dutchess County Surrogate’s Court.
